Concept sketch for my illustration “Cemetery of Smiles“. The final, painted illustration is art for a fantasy/horror card game. The concept for this piece revolves around an undead clown called “Creepo“. He is depicted in this sketch, which was used for the final illustration, crawling up and out of his grave as the image’s focal point. In the background, I included other interesting zombie clowns in varying detail.
One of the favorites ended up being the unnamed juggling clown to the left of Creepo‘s grave. Of course, he is juggling skulls.
Those that know my work understand that a common theme of mine, when working on a horror illustration piece, is to try and lighten it a bit with some dark, twisted humor. In “Cemetery of Smiles“, I did that by making Creepo’s headstone read “He Killed Us With Laughter“. Their are a few other dark humor gags in the final illustration as well. One of my favorites is the zombie hand emerging from the grave over Creepo’s left shoulder that is wearing an electric joy buzzer.
